Sergio Preciado
H.B. Fort Memorial Scholarship
My name is Sergio Preciado and I'm 19 years old. I was born in Houston, but I was mostly raised in Mexico. When I turned 16 years old, I decided to move to El Paso in order to complete my high school and my future career. I'm planning on going to UTEP this year for a computer science major. I love every aspect of technology and I would like to become part of it by coding and developing programs. I want to specialize in either artificial intelligence or cyber security.
I was raised by a traditional family. My mom is a housewife and my dad works in the construction field, but most of my life I was raised by my grandparents. I have two sisters; one is 11 years old and the other one is 15. Most of my family actually lives in Mexico while I live with my aunt and my uncle here in El Paso. One thing that I love about living here is seeing so much diversity everywhere I go. Diversity is something that I really enjoy because of my personal background. El Paso is a city that shares traditions from many different cultures, and I consider it to be the perfect place for my future.

Luisa Sánchez
Miner Scholarship

My name is Luisa Fernanda Sanchez Ruiz. Currently, I’m nineteen years old. I am originally from Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico, where I lived my first sixteen years of life. I attended Tecnologico de Monterrey during my last year at Chihuahua. I moved to El Paso in August of the 2015. I came with my family that is composed by five members; my mother Elena, my father Francisco, and my two brothers Francisco and Kevin. Before moving, I had the opportunity to live one year in Taiwan as an exchange student (2014-2015). There, I developed the language of Mandarin (Chinese), I took approximately three months to start understanding and saying some basic phrases and around six months to be able to keep a conversation. As one of the funniest things that happened to me being an exchange student was having people thinking that I was actually Taiwanese instead of Mexican. I lived with three different families during the whole year. This experience gave me strength and an open mind to try new things and gave me independence. That same experience gave me strength to leave everything in Chihuahua and come to El Paso for a new beginning. It’s been tough but at the same time it’s been great to get involved with new people and finally graduate with such a brilliant generation and magnificent friends. I worked hard during my Junior year and even more during my Senior year to get a place in the top 10% students and also I was part of the top 2%. I got selected to be part of the Dance team at Austin High School but I preferred to be part of the Mathlete team. I joined the team since the second semester of my Junior year and I became captain in my Senior year. I participated in districts and I got 5th place in Number Sense and Calculator. I advanced to regionals with the Number Sense team. Also during my senior year, I attended the Philosophy club and I was part of the High Q team. Now that I graduated from High School, I’m planning to attend UTEP and study international business. I’m greatly thankful for the support of the Miner Scholarship, it will be easier to begin my career. I expect to keep studying until I achieve my goals. With the support of my parents and friends, and the will of God I’m sure I will succeed.

Marissa Montelongo
Katherine Aguilar Memorial Scholarship and
Class of 1966 Scholarship
My name is Marissa Montelongo and I am a recent graduate from Austin High School.

Playing sports has influenced my education to the point where I would like to become a teacher in hopes of educating others. The idea of high school sports has opened my eyes that there will always be young athletes who need guidance in their next steps in life, and I have seen how important it is to be that helping hand. Teaching can be a gateway for me to reconnect with younger kids and I don’t think I would have wanted to have such dreams about furthering my education while wanting to educate others if it wasn’t for playing sports in my high school career.
I will be going to UTEP to become a history teacher and in the future a basketball coach. It is my dream to be able to come back to Austin and teach while having a varsity team of my own. I am excited to stay here in El Paso to help our city and our community.
Go Panthers!

I will be attending Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas to major in Psychology in preparation for becoming a Forensic Psychologist. Being the first in my family to attend college is a huge step for my family and me, so I enrolled in the First Generation Club at Texas Tech. This club will provide me with endless support and tools that are necessary for school. I am very excited and anxious to see what lies ahead of me.

Jesse Maese
Stella Adams Memorial Scholarship
Hello, My name is Jesse Maese. It was at Austin High School where I found my passion in pursuing a career in law and government, so I will be continuing my education at the University of Texas at El Paso, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Legal Reasoning. Afterwards I plan to take my education further and attend the Law School at Texas Tech so that I can challenge the Bar Exam to be able to practice law in Texas. I know the road ahead will be long and challenging, but the skills I have learned at Austin have prepared me for such eventualities. I discovered my love for math, science, law, and especially being able to teach others. In the four years I spent at Austin, I have joined many clubs in which I have learned a great deal and made many friends as a result. My commitment to the school's Mock Trial team had earned me the position of captain. As captain, I had many responsibilities such as learning the rules of competition and vocabulary that attorneys use in the courtroom. After learning these skills, I had to teach and lecture my teammates so that they were able to use them as well. If I could describe myself in one word it would be a teacher because I find joy and pleasure from teaching others what they might not know yet. It’s the satisfaction in looking at their face when they finally understand the problem. In the beginning of my freshman year, I had set a goal for myself to get A-honor roll all four years of high school. It is with great gratification to announce that I have achieved that goal. I am thankful that the alumni scholarship committee has chosen me for the Stella Adams Memorial Scholarship. I plan to use is wisely towards my education. My goal now is to graduate from UTEP with a 4.0 GPA.

T'keyah Roberts
Javier Delgado Memorial Scholarship
Hello, my name is T’keyah Roberts. I was born in Atlanta, GA, but also spent most of my coming to age years in the Caribbean. At the end of middle school, I moved back to the United States and started at Austin High School. Throughout high school, the one thing that defined me was theatre. In every other sentence that came out of my mouth, the word theatre was mentioned. It shaped who I am, and without that, I wouldn’t be the person I am today.
The most common way people describe me is full of life, talkative, and an all-around bubbly person with a dash of spice. I have to say, I'm inclined to agree with them.

Jesus Terrones
Stella Adams Memorial Scholarship
Born on the small U.S.-Mexico border town of El Paso, Texas, I have always been an optimistic person when it comes to reaching academic success. As a young child without a father figure, I would always dream of being as protective as a father would. For this, I decided to have strong potential for protecting my community and my country. I want to obtain a major in criminal justice in order to pursue a career as a U.S. Border Patrol agent. My potential for working for this agency is the reason why I decided to move from Andress High School to Austin High School during my sophomore year. During the second semester of my junior year, my potential for wanting to reach my career goal grew more, which is the reason why I decided to join the U.S. Border Patrol Explorers in Post 910 located in the El Paso Sector Station One. Until this day, I continue to attend the program on Wednesdays and Saturdays. I also work for an immigration attorney, who is also an Austin Alumni, from Monday to Friday in Central El Paso.
I would like to thank the Alumni Association for your consideration upon being a candidate for this scholarship and I am at your service and orders. Thank you.

Dante Hahn
Non Traditional Scholarship
My name is Dante Frederick Hahn. I am 18 years old and a 2017 Austin HS graduate. I'm a very talkative, outgoing person. I love to meet and get to know people. While in high school, I was known for helping fellow classmates in any way I could. I am a determined person; when I set myself a goal, I do anything in my power to achieve it, no matter how long it takes. One thing I'm proud of is that I'm a geek. I love video games and learning about all the D.C. and Marvel Superheroes and villains. That's something I enjoy a lot. I am looking forward to attending New Mexico State University to help start my career in computer engineering. I have always been fascinated with computers and always wanted to learn how they operate. I would like to thank the Austin alumni for finding me deserving of this scholarship. This will help me in starting off my future. I hope to make Austin High School proud of my future accomplishments.
